Week Two: Online Communities
This week, I feel like I'm navagating more familiar waters, with Facebook. My niece invited me last year to join Facebook, and personally, I've found it a great resource to keep tabs on long-lost family and friends. We also set up a page for Hutchinson Public Library last spring, and there are several of us on staff at HPL who try to keep it maintained. It's opened a new source of free promotion for library events and services. We also use Twitter on a regular basis, but I like it less than Facebook, since you're very limited to the length of your message.

I agree that facebook give a lot more options in reaching new patrons. Twitter could be more of a benefit if we had someone who sent twitters all day but not as likely to be a popular following for our patrons.
ReplyDeleteFacebook also has other 'bells and whistles' that twitter doesn't offer, like the events feature, that may be useful to libraries.
